Study area
Fokontany Ambalamahasoa, Rural Commune of Mahazina, Amoron'ny Mania Region, Madagascar.
Objectives
To identify and rank the main causes of leaf desiccation in leek and to propose improved technical packages suited to the local context. Specific objectives: (1) evaluate the effect of optimized water management on reducing desiccation and improving yield; (2) determine the impact of balanced organic fertilization; (3) assess the efficacy of biological crop protection (B-NIMO) against pests and diseases.
Methodology
CRBD; 4 treatments × 4 blocks = 16 plots of 4 m² (160 plants/plot, spacing 25 cm × 15 cm). T1: farmer's practice (control); T2: rationalized irrigation (70–80% field capacity, 3 waterings/week); T3: complete organic fertilization with well-decomposed cattle manure (24 t/ha); T4: biological phytosanitary protection (B-NIMO foliar spray).
Monitored parameters
Weekly: percentage of plants showing leaf desiccation, average number of desiccated leaves per plant, desiccation intensity (0–5 scale), plant height, overall plant vigor.
At harvest: total yield (kg/plot or t/ha), length and diameter of the white shank, average shank weight, number of green leaves, percentage of marketable leeks and grading by caliber. Economic analysis (input costs, gross revenue, net margin, benefit-cost ratio, break-even point).
